WATER WEB

About the Walk

2016 marked 50 years since the last great flood of Florence – the River Arno bursting its banks and quickly flooding the city centre on November 4th 1966.

Lives were lost and thousands of precious and irreplaceable works of art and literature were destroyed,  as the water level rose to well above head-height and flooded the city’s museums, churches, libraries and cellars. Restoration work continues.

To this day, a line on city buildings marks the height of the 1966 water level.

Walk the line with your Florence Walks guide, learn the history of the city and listen to the amazing story of that one night in November.
